BABYMONSTER’s ‘SHEESH’ is aging to be ‘pretty good’ over the span of the last few weeks, though I haven’t played it as much as expected. To be honest, I shouldn’t be too surprised given that I liked most of BLACK PINK’s releases, with BABYMONSTER’s songs so far following a similar (but not the same) song structure as BLACK PINK’s. It is just that it is wildly clear that their full potential is far from being unleashed given their talent.
‘LIKE THAT’ is better showcase of their vocal prowess than ‘SHEESH’, being a song gifted to them by Charlie Puth. This is not the first time I’ve written about a song which has his involvement in K-pop (AKA Stray Kids’ ‘Lose My Breath’). Thankfully, I think ‘LIKE THAT’ suits BABYMONSTER a lot more than Stray Kids suits ‘Lose My Breath’, which gives me a much better impression right of the bat. Every note is within their comfort range, and they sound amazing. In particular, Pharita’s voice, which I have a hard time appreciating especially when she attempts to belt or sing out of her midrange, sounds stellar within the song. I have to give her credit when it is due.
Its melodies are quite catchy, sleek, and evocative, yet also somewhat reserved. I appreciate the vibe that it is going for, but its ‘reserved’ feel is what ultimately holds the track back from greater heights. After the 2 minute mark, all that is sung in the last minute is essentially a rehash of all ideas that were used within the first 2 minutes- which were not a lot. I would have appreciated more development in the song to fully show the girls’ talents more as well as to make the song more replay-worthy. I’m left unfulfilled.
Ultimately, ‘LIKE THAT’ is perfectly fine but undercooked.
