Song Review: Eve, Psyche & The Bluebeard’s wife by Le Sserafim

At first listen, I knew that this song was going straight up to one of my favorites of the year.

I’ve seen other people mention that this kind of music has been done in the past and better, but this is the first time I’ve heard of anything that sounds like ‘Eve’. Perhaps it can be attributed to my age, having never stepped in a club before.

Anyway, I’m utterly fascinated. ‘Eve’ is engaging, sleek, confident, and the girls absolutely sell it in their vocal delivery. This enables the song to fully bloom, with its production being an utter work of art. It just does everything right. There is nothing I can really critique, except perhaps the way it ended was a tad bit abrupt. However, the instrumental choices, rhythm, and the mixing is all perfection. One can tell that for what it intends to do, it does it well.

Its hook is also non-melodic like some of the recent releases, but it manages to make it work thanks to how well written the English lyrics are and how it flows. “I’m a mess mess mess mess” etc. is something iconic that I will easily remember for the years to come. The way the Yunjin says it as well is very, for the the lack of a better word, ‘sticky’. This can also be said for the catchphrase, ‘I wish for what’s forbidden’ chanted by both Yunjin and Kazuha. If anything, the ‘boom boom’ bit can use some reinvention and variation, or another hook entirely just to make it that tad bit stronger.

‘Eve’ also doesn’t come off as it is trying too hard. Sometimes, it is a good thing, and it works really well for the song. It feels self assured in what it is and what it will bring to you. I find that very interesting.

It is safe to say that ‘Eve’ as well as another b-side, ‘No Return (Into the Unknown)’ helped me stay enthusiastic about Le Sserafim’s album and keep hoping for better things for the future, amidst the disappointment that was ‘UNFORGIVEN’.
