Interestingly enough, I find ‘Cool With You’ to be very effective as a song in general- despite being even shorter than ‘ETA’ and ‘Super Shy’.
From the get-go, ‘Cool With You’ was never gonna be the kind of song that you would be singing to yourself for hours on end. Its garage-influenced production and its cool-sounding RnB chords make it extremely pleasant and easy-to-listen-to, best enjoyed at the moment, rather than expecting aftershocks of the song hitting you at random intervals in a day. Or perhaps, because of how deceptively catchy NewJeans’ songs are, it might actually pop up once in while thanks to its chorus, ‘Coooooooooool with you’ already having that potential to.
In terms of melody, ‘Cool With You’ is among the most streamline and straightforward within NewJeans’ discography, but it really matches what the song was trying to go for. The chords are very familiar, but they ring true. It reminds me a lot of Natty’s recent ‘Sugarcoat’ in a way, but not quite. But its familiarity hits the right spot for this who are looking for it- a.k.a me. I will always welcome this sound palette.
In contrast to ‘ETA’ and similar to ‘Super Shy’, NewJeans vocal delivery perfectly complimented the song, with their cool tones making the song irresistable in a way quite unable to be put into words. It just works. Particularly, Danielle did a splendid job. Additionally, the vocal mixing puts more spotlight on their vocals compared to ‘ETA’, which gets bonus points. The vocal processing also made their voices take on a ‘cooler’ timbre than their natural voices, which help add towards the song’s atmosphere and vibe.
The more ‘Cooooooool with you’ repeats, the more it sucks me in. I don’t know why it just grabs on and refuses to let go. I don’t see this aging badly in any case.
Overall, I currently prefer this over ‘ETA’, but the more developed melodies and interesting song structure of the former might age better. Time will tell. Sometimes, a ‘wisp of a song’ can work. This works really well- at least for me.
